READING: A BOY TALKS ABOUT ANIMALS WITH HIS SISTER

Brother: Hey, Sara. What are you doing?

Sister: Hi, Tom. I’m reading a book about animals. Do you like animals?

Brother: Yes, I like animals! My favorite animal is the lion. It is big and strong. What about you?

Sister: I like elephants. They are large and gentle. Elephants are also very smart. Do you know what your favorite animal can do?

Brother: Yes! Lions can run fast. They are good hunters. I think lions are brave, too. Did you know that?

Sister: Yes, I knew. They live in Africa. I like to watch them on TV. My teacher says lions are the "king of the jungle." That sounds cool.

Brother: Yes! I think lions are also very handsome with their big, thick mane. What about elephants? Why do you like them?

Sister: Well, I like that they are calm. They use their long trunk to eat and drink. And they take care of each other. Did you know elephants have families?

Brother: Yes! Elephants are very kind. I think animals are smarter than we think. Do you want to work with animals when you grow up?

Sister: Maybe. I want to be a vet. I like taking care of animals. I could help dogs, cats, and maybe even elephants! What about you? What job do you want?

Brother: I’m not sure yet. Maybe I will be a zookeeper. It sounds fun to take care of lions, tigers, and bears. I could feed them every day and make sure they are happy.

Sister: That sounds like a cool job! You would have to be very careful around wild animals. They are dangerous sometimes.

Brother: Yes, but if I learn how to work with them, I think it would be safe. I could learn how to train them, too.

Sister: Wow! Training animals would be fun. My friend’s father is an animal trainer. He works with dogs. He teaches them to follow commands like "sit" and "stay."

Brother: That’s interesting! I could also work with farm animals. Cows, horses, and sheep need care, too. What do you think?

Sister: Yes, I think farm animals are important. Farmers need healthy animals for milk, meat, and wool. They need help from vets, too.

Brother: That’s true. Horses are strong and fast. They help farmers work in the fields. Have you seen a horse close up?

Sister: Yes, I did last summer. We went to a farm, and I rode a horse! It was so tall and beautiful. I felt like I was flying when it started to run!

Brother: That sounds amazing! Horses are good at running and carrying heavy things. I think they are some of the most useful animals.

Sister: Yes, horses are very useful. But I think dogs are the best animals. They are loyal and friendly. My friend wants to be a police officer, and she wants a police dog to help her.

Brother: That’s a great idea! Police dogs are brave, and they help find missing people or catch bad guys. Dogs have an important job.

Sister: Yes, they do! And they are also good friends. I think when I’m a vet, I will take care of a lot of dogs.

Brother: I’m sure you will be a great vet, Sara. You love animals so much.

Sister: Thanks, Tom. And I think you will be a great zookeeper or animal trainer. You are always so patient.

Brother: Thank you! Let’s both work with animals and make them happy!

Sister: Yes, let’s
